THIS POST WILL BE A SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR US UNSTOPPABLE TRAVELERS.
In this period during which we find ourselves locked inside our homes, boredom could storm us and not knowing what to do can be frustrating.
We simply have to adapt to the new rhythms, then it will be as simple as walking. We, travellers, know how to adapt easily because it is in our DNA.
But how can we keep the spirit of adventure alive within us?
COOK TYPICAL FOREIGN FOOD
Cook the typical dishes of your favourite destination. Recreate the typical cuisine of that country that you visited last year. Smells and flavours will take you back in time, to those days when travel was possible. Let yourself be carried away by the scents of oriental cuisine, and immerse yourself in Caribbean cuisine.
Discover the dishes of that trip that you had planned for early 2020 but then got cancelled. Place the tablet in front of the stove with the recipe you have in mind, prepare the ingredients you will need. Be creative.
LOOK AT OLD TRAVEL PHOTOS
Opening old photo albums of that vacation back in 1993 with your parents is one of those things that I love doing. Dream of those distant days, those days with high-waisted trousers, the broad shoulders of the jacket and the voluminous hair of your Mom. I love old photo albums and spend hours leafing through them. A journey into the past.
Open that old computer submerged in dust. Who knows how many secrets you will find in there. Photos of old trips made with my classmates, the first trip alone. Dream by diving into old memories.
There is no better time to organise those 10 thousand photographs that are currently maxing out your phone memory.
CREATE YOUR NEXT TRIP … MORE SUSTAINABLY
Our planet is talking to us.
Now that we are locked inside the house we travel less and the pollution has visibly decreased. The skies are blue, the waters of the seas and rivers are clean and clear.
I think the time has come to learn to travel responsibly with an eye on sustainability.
Having fun is beautiful but respecting the environment is even more beautiful.
In my YouTube channel you will find tips and suggestions on how to travel by minimising your footprint.
LISTEN TO MUSIC FROM FAR AWAY COUNTRIES
Well yes, the power of music makes us daydream. Music is good for the spirit and the mind. Don’t be ashamed to try dancing along to Indian or African music. Have fun within the walls of your home.
For once we can really say “dance as if nobody is watching you”, because this time it’s true!
LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE
Do you already plan to travel to Japan as soon as the situation returns to normal? Then study Japanese. Why not? How many times do we say, “if I had time, I would…” well, now you have the time! No more excuses are allowed. The Internet is full of resources for free online courses.
Learning a new language keeps your mind active.
LEARN NEW ACTIVITIES
Make some space in the living room. Move the coffee table and the sofa. Challenge yourself! Learn the oldest Yoga of India such as Kundalini Yoga. Light some incense and find the sound of the gong on the internet. Try Japanese martial arts. Obviously always without exaggerating to avoid hurting yourself.
There are many activities and new hobbies typical of some destinations that you have dreamt of visiting. Find yours!
READ TRAVEL BOOKS
The sunny days are almost here, relax in the garden or on the balcony at home, while you load up on vitamin D with a nice book that talks about travel. Reread those books you’ve already read and discover others.
My favourite: Un posto nel mondo by Fabio Volo (my favourite Italian writer)
Other travel books that entertained me are:
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert,
Into the wild by Jon Krakauer.
WATCH TRAVEL MOVIES
It’s always nice to sit on the sofa with crisps and popcorn and relax in front of a good movie. My favourite film is undoubtedly Into the Wild which captivates me so much that I really believe I am in Alaska.
Other movies that I like are:
Vicky, Christina, Barcelona,
The Bucket List.
If you are a TV series lover, Netflix gives you a lot of options. A trip out of the ordinary can be found with Dark.
The journey is in the mind! Here is how I keep traveling while staying home. Do it too, and this quarantine will be less difficult. Trust me!
